I've written before about the limited editions available at Creative Time, a wonderful public arts organization I had the privilege to work for from 2003 to 2009, but in the wake of yesterday's anniversary I wanted to share a special project. Artists provided powerful responses to the tragedy of 9/11, and ten years later no small gesture captures my feelings better than Hans Haacke's poster.
For clarity, the poster is white cardstock with the shape of two towers removed. In 2002 when this poster was produced, it was wheat pasted up around NYC over the typical advertisements, posters, and graffiti to remind us that the towers, now absent, are present everywhere.
Simple and white, the poster itself is lovely, the gesture lovelier.
Amazing poster. So understated, but powerful. I can picture them, as you describe, pasted all around NYC in remembrance. Haunting imagery....
ReplyDeleteHere is the poster project I am currently in awe of.... www.thehaitiposterproject.com
I love how art can help us to process and respond to tragedy. Lovely.
