Chalkboard paint in a powder room.  Makes me think of the designer's bathroom--was it Albert Hadley?--where guests were encouraged to trace their hands on the wall and leave messages in sharpie (only a little less permanent).  Or maybe it has more to do with public bathroom graffiti?  Either way, really, really fun.

You don't have to have an amazing plank ceiling for this to work: any wood will do. Just paint it up in a series of complementary colors.  Leave the rest of the space bright and simple.

Favorite song lyrics, a poem, or the funniest thing your kid ever said.  (Skip the graffiti, though: pretty hard to pull off at home, and if you have kids, they might get the wrong idea and apply elsewhere in the house!)

Color block stairs!  In addition to the obvious yellow swatch below the railing, I alo love the combo of dark grey risers light grey treads and--the kicker!--white quarter round.

If your stairs are in bad shape, this is a fun, modern solution.

Have pretty pots, but lack storage? Do as Julia did: hang them up. The arrangement here, via Apartment Therapy, is more aesthetic, less utilitarian, but there's something to be said for Child's method, too: hang a pegboard, arrange your pans, and outline them in marker, chalk or paint. You'll always know what goes where.

I'm having a dinner party tonight. I suppose cooking is on my mind!

p.s. Note that mint ceiling, and the sink pipes painted to match the wall.  This is super fun color blocking!
