Trend alert: up and over
From her Dutch teacher, my 5 year old picked up the very cute habit of saying "oofta!" and I keep hearing that word, with a little bump in the middle ( OOF-ta!) when I look at these wall-and-ceiling treatments.

Trending
My aunt sent me Kathryn M. Ireland's latest book for my birthday.
("What does the M stand for," my 5 year old wants to know.)
Of course I have been tearing into it like the crazed disciple I have become, and I've noticed something that Kathryn M. Ireland uses a lot, and often in different ways.

Do you see it? (Did I make it too obvious?) I can't find my favorite example on line and, quite frankly, I'm feeling too spent to bother with the scanner.
Maybe I'm just tuning into it because it's something I'm seeing everywhere lately. More on that tomorrow.

Swan's Way

I feel compelled to tell you I have had this photograph for AGES, just ages. (In fact, you can see it in my Brooklyn bedroom in 2001). A photographer friend gave it to me back when I was in the biz, and it was one of the first pieces I had professionally framed.

How many pins equals a trend?
I saw this slipcover over at I Suwanee last week, and I thought to myself I thought, Self? You've seen that type of ribbon band somewhere before.
And sure enough, it joined some friend in the "upholstery" folder on my pinterest.
Yup. Ribbon-banding seems to be the next new thing in upholstery and drapery. Perhaps another comeback from the seventies? My aunt apparently tricked out some white curtains with yards and yards of grosgrain ribbon back in the day.
Interestingly, when I was searching for additional examples, I found an awful lot of photographs of rubber band chairs. This one is actually kind of cool.

Trend spotting at Home Goods
My in-laws are in town from Illinois, where they live in the country surrounding a small town. My mother in law is an avid reader and follows some of the decorating shows on HGTV. One of the activities on her list was a visit to Home Goods. Not so much to shop as to see what it was about.
Yesterday we hit up the Eden Prairie location (for you locals), one of the biggest in the Twin Cities metro area, and a stand alone from TJ Maxx. I was looking for a couple of things for client projects, though I find that they rarely have just what you are looking for. I always think it's fun to see which trends are trickling down. sometimes I think they're right on, and sometimes I sort of scratch my head at their choices.
These Arteriors-inspired table lamps are great--I almost snatched them up myself for my girls room.
Still loving Moroccan tables. In fact, I just painted my own vintage one. I'll show you soon.
Grasscloth-wrapped furniture.
These Thomas Paul fabrics are popping up everywhere, but I still love them for their large scale and bold designs. These pillows cost less than a yard of the fabric for Duralee.
Chevron still going strong.
Then there are the rugs.
Ikat seem to be everywhere, and while I am a fan of these, I think you would get tired of them--fast. Put it on a pillow instead!
I was surprised to see and overdyed specimin. Looks good, and it's super cheap--but don't step on it. The thing that's so special about the real overdyed rugs is that the rugs themselves are good quality (if not in great shape) and you can feel it in the yard. This one feels like the plastic it is likely made of.
A client had just ordered a crewelwork rug from anthropologie, and here they are popping up at HG. The colors are a bit muddier on these, but the patterns are great and the crewelwork looks pretty authentic--and it's probably hard to fake.
The bergere chair seems to be going strong, and I have to say, I was taken with these. Love the black linen on the faux cerused oak frame. But again, these would just be for show (silly, yes?) The upholstery is incredibly stiff.
I didn't take as many photos of the "misses." Some of the junk is just that: junky. I saw a ton of pieces in the sort of industrial vibe, but this look works best if it looks like you salvaged your piece from the side of a road. These pieces are too new, too "finished." (I hate any inauthentic treatment trying to pass.)
And for me, the most bizarre was seeing a number of pieces of the Restoration Hardware metal-clad furniture. I've seen an armchair, a sort of steamer trunk, and this dresser.
Do these pieces have mass appeal?
I will admit, in the right setting I might like this little dresser. But the armchair is a disaster.
What about you: any shopping lately? What trends are you seeing out there in the world?

Red Ikat Bolster
I may have stumbled upon the solution to my guest room throw pillow problem. (Oh, to have such problems!)
A giant bolster in red and cream ikat.
The surprising source?

Now of course I could buy some ikat and make the thing (in fact, Duralee has a red ikat that goes nicely with my existing pillow, also a Duralee fabric), but this is ALREADY DONE.
The problem? While somewhat reasonably prices, the bolster cover plus insert costs more than the dresser I put in the room. Or the headboard. Great thrifted finds, true, but still.
Also, I generally think that a trend is FINALLY on its way out when a big chain store takes it up, especially a very traditional one like PB. That said, I kind of gotta hand it to them: they did a good job with these, don't you think?
Right now I feel like I will always love ikat, but it isn't one of those things that is having a moment but I have always loved, like Danish Modern furniture, Moroccan tile, metallic gold, and Indian blockprints. So time will tell.
What do you think: will you buy something that is "over"? Or could you not care less?
