Give thanks: Giveaway!

I'm back from New York, sated by all the good food, good company, and good work, and celebrating with a giveaway!

I'm always a big fan of energizing a space with treasures from afar.  Thanks to to good people of Novica, you can find goods from around the world, made my individual artisans, without ever buying a plane ticket.  (Though of course if you can afford to travel and bring home treasures directly, do it!)

There is a LOT on Novica--so much, in fact, that it can be a little overwhelming if you're not sure what you are looking for.  That said, you can search by item type, country of origin, individual artisan, etc.  If you DO know what you're looking for, you will quickly find a ton of great items at your fingertips.

I had quite a lot of fun going through the site and picking some favorites at that price point (or less: keep in mind that you'll have to pay shipping as part of the gift card if you win.)  (Okay, and for some reason I always seem to include one item that is way off the price point.  Can you guess which one it is here?)

Easy peasy canopies (and a giveaway)

Doesn't that make you want to say "can-o-peasies?"  Or is it just me?


I've been staging a house.  The owners are adorable and have made a ton of great choices, like painting out the upper half story white (it was knotty pine) and installing white flooring, thereby making the long narrow room as expansive as possible.  (Also creating ombre stairs to that space, as shared here.)  But, they have been living in 1100 square feet with their two kids, two dogs, and two guinea pigs for long enough that they started to lose perspective.  It happens.

After lots of clearing out and refocusing rooms, the house is looking great and will be on the market soon.  My favorite change?  To make the most of the sloped ceiling upstairs and mask some odd doors and built in nooks in the walls, we made a pair of canopies from inexpensive fabric.




Cute, yes?

The best part?  We put them up with velcro.  Quick directions (if you sew):

-hem the bottom 4 inches
- put in 1 1/2 inch hems on both sides
- put in a 3 each hem at the top
- get some velcro for decor projects.  This kind has adhesive on one side and you sew on the other.
- adhere the sticky side to the place where the wall meets the ceiling and where the half wall meets the straight wall.  (Allow 24 hours to fully cure).
- sew velcro to the top of your panel
- put your panel up at the top, drape to determine how much fullness you want (we did not want a a lot), and pin in two spots across the fabric where the second strip of velcro will go
- sew in second strip of velcro

Alternately, you could use a pre-made curtain panel and just sew the rod pocket closed on the sides to avoid sagging.  Easy!

The whole world in your hands (a giveaway)



Okay, I promised you a board today, and I gotta tell you, this one is all kinds of shocking to me.  Where is the color?  Where are the layers?  But I have to say, I kind of want to move right in.  And I would do my best to resist the addition of throw pillows.  I mean, with a bed like that...

You may be more surprised to find that this room was inspired by this globe.



The people at Kirklands offered to send it to me to check it out in close up, but I politely declined.  No gifts, for me, thanks.  But they've got one for you, and that I can get behind.

Breaking From Tradition

Public Service Announcement!

It appears I left out some details about the custom initial necklace giveaway.

Here's my 5-year old wearing hers.  We chose a sort of art deco "C" and a little stamped disc that says "love."  Clio loves it so much, she keeps it in a little thumbprint bowl on her bedside table.

(At the same time, she hates having her picture taken.  I did my best.)



The giveaway is for a custom piece.  Annie will work with you to choose shape, size, the type of letter, etc.  Locals could do this in the shop, anyone else by phone or email.

When it comes to the holidays (or anything else, really), do you stick with ingrained traditions?  Or, as an adult, do you make your own?

My family has always been a Frasier Fir or, as back up, Balsam Fir kind of a family.  When we went to Mother Earth Gardens for our Christmas tree the other day, that's what I was looking for.  Instead, I was drawn to the tall, skinny, bare-branched pines--the ones that look straight out of Norway.  Or A Charlie Brown Christmas.  For the first time, I found myself wondering what kind of tree I liked.  And I have been buying my own tree for nearly twenty years now.

My girls, too, were drawn to the softer needles of a pine, and to seal the deal, the white pines were about half the price of the firs.  As it turns out, they are native to Minnesota so they grow easily and naturally here, while Frasier's chug water like a frat boy doing a keg stand, and they take a lot longer to reach maturity.

We brought home a huge, un-dyed white pine, and put it in the big window in the dining room.  It is the first thing you see when you open the front door.  I feel that my happiness level is raised by the presence of this tree.


It's funny: going with tradition means you never have to think about what YOU really want.  Sometimes that's easier.  This is the first year that my kids and I will wake up in our own house on Christmas morning, and it feels like an opportunity to create our own Christmas traditions.  Such a fun opportunity to think about our family and what we want Christmas to look like.  But daunting, too: creating all the magic is on us.
